The 2+2 Computer Science Dual Degree Program (DDP for short) jointly established by Zhejiang University and Simon Fraser University (SFU), was launched in 2005. This is the first dual-degree undergraduate program jointly developed by China and foreign countries and is also an attempt to promote international education collaboration. Chinese students who enter the program will be in for four years of study. They will study at Zhejiang University in the first 2 years, and go to SFU in Canada for the next 2 years. Students who complete the relevant learning requirements will receive a bachelor's degree in computer science from both Zhejiang University and SFU.

At the BC Tech Summit in May 2018 (hosted in Vancouver, Canada), a driver warning simulation system sparked media attention. Four young students were involved in the project and all of them were from DDP. The professionalized education, international communication platform and cutting-edge technological training that come with DDP will help you launch your computing science career as well.

About DDP

The Dual Degree Program was established in 2005 by Zhejiang University and Canada's SFU. It aims to cultivate high-level computer professionals who are familiar with the culture of the two countries, proficient in the two languages, and equipped with solid professional theoretical foundation, cutting-edge knowledge, forward-looking international vision and strong international competitiveness. In the past 13 years, the project has won unanimous praise from the students for its scientific curriculum system, first-class teaching staff and standardized teaching services, and has repeatedly won awards for outstanding international education projects at home and abroad.

Founded in 1965, SFU is located in the beautiful city of Vancouver. It is a top comprehensive public research university in North America. It has been rated as the best comprehensive university in Canada by the authoritative Canadian magazine McLin Magazine for 15 times. The university, once again ranked first in 2018, has a reputation as “the most valuable comprehensive university in Canada”. SFU is known for its innovative and practical courses, especially computer science and business, and its graduates are well received.

Up to now, 216 Chinese and Canadian students have graduated and received double bachelor degrees. Many of them work for internationally renowned companies such as Microsoft, Twitter, IBM, RIM Communications, Amazon, SAP and EA. More than half of the graduates chose to study for master’s or doctoral degree at world renowned universities such as Stanford University, Yale University, Cornell University, University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, Duke University, Boston University, New York University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Southern California, University of Illinois, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, University of Bristol, etc. There are also many graduates studying in domestic universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, National Defense Science and Technology University, and Zhejiang University.

How do I join DDP?

DDP recruits around 30 people per year. It consists of both Chinese and Canadian students, of which no more than 20 Chinese students. SFU selects 1-2 outstanding teachers each year to come to Zhejiang University to teach. Zhejiang University also sends excellent teachers to SFU every year to teach and cooperate with professors.

Why is DDP Different?

Students that are involved in DDP will improve drastically in terms of foreign language ability, international exchange, professional foundation and comprehensive quality

Prof. Yale Patt, American Academy of Engineering Fellow, IEEE Fellow and ACM Fellow, currently a professor at the School of Electronics and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas. Yale is here to teach Introduction to Computer Systems to DDP students.)

In DDP, students can enjoy the top educational resources of both schools, lay a solid foundation at Zhejiang University, acquire expertise and forefront skills at SFU, and gain hands-on experience.

(Prof. Joe Timoney, Head of the Department of Computer Science at the National University of Ireland. Joe came to our school to teach Foundation of Software Engineering to DDP students)

Students can experience two different educational systems and cultures, receive first-class international education, experience the different styles of the two universities and broaden your horizon.

(Prof. Whitfield Diffie, winner of the 2015 Turing Award, world-renowned cryptography technology and security technology expert and inventor of the “public key encryption” concept. Whitfield came to our school to hold a special academic report for DDP students)

There is no shortage of outstanding seniors in DDP. Let’s hear what they have to say about the program.

"A trip to a country that is full of challenges and opportunities!"

—— Yang Ning, DDP Class of 2005, currently working for Microsoft Corporation in Washington, USA

"Two institutions, two styles, two degrees, double the success!"

—— Lu Hao, DDP Class of 2006, also a PhD at the University of British Columbia, currently working at LinkedIn

"The DDP program elevated me to a higher starting point both in job hunting and postgraduate studies after four years in college!"

—— Fan Chaoyu, DDP Class of 2006, then studied computer science at Stanford University

"In four years, I have traveled through two continents, experienced two cultures, and met countless friends. I love the weeping willows on West Lake and the northern lights above the glaciers. Double the journey, double the wonder!"

—— Yin Xiaoqian, DDP Class of 2011, currently working at Google, London

"The DDP program elevated me to a higher starting point both in job hunting and postgraduate studies after four years in college!"

—— Gao Wei, DDP Class of 2011, then studied computer science at Yale University and now works at Google, Seattle
