From July 6 to 9, 2026, the joint SPM/SMI International Conference was held in Istanbul, Turkey. Researcher Zou Qiang from the State Key Laboratory of CAD&CG, Zhejiang University, received the SMI Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Shape Modeling—making him the first Asian recipient since the award was established.
The International Society for Shape Modeling is a flagship international academic organisation in the CAD field. The Young Investigator Award recognises early career scholars who have made significant contributions to geometric modelling and is one of the most prestigious international awards for young researchers in CAD.
Researcher Zou has long been dedicated to CAD theory and technology, conducting systematic research in high performance geometric computing, micro geometric modelling, and intelligent geometric design. His work has been published in leading international journals and conferences, including Computer Aided Design, ASME Journal of Mechanical Design, CIRP Annals, and SIGGRAPH. His research has been applied to the development of key national level models in China, has supported the domestic substitution of CAD software, and has contributed to drafting China’s national testing standards for 3D CAD software.
He currently serves on the editorial board of Computer Aided Design—the top journal in the CAD field—and has chaired the organising committees of SPM, SMI, and ChinaGraph conferences.
