Undergraduate students, graduate students and teachers all obtained glorious achievements in the College badminton contest in the past. An SQTP program for undergraduate students, the race got backed up and proposed by faculties in the College and was shored up and elaborately organized by the College’s work union and the Badminton Society. It was successfully held after full preparation. With exclusive sponsorship for the ample results, students and teachers got their zeal towards the badminton contest aroused. ‘Wish Cup’ Tournament on Badminton for Students and Teachers was open in Fengyu Playfield in the Zijingang Campus. Around 20 teachers and 30 students participated in the activity. Some teachers even postpone overseas business trip or cancelled meetings to present this event. The tournament adopted mixture doubles when teachers and students took turns for drawing lots. Mr. Luo Xueqing, President of the Workers Union in the College, attended the contest. They joined Ms. Zhou, representative of the sponsor in offering certificate of honor and awards to prize winners. The tournament enabled students to see a different side of their teachers. The gap between teachers and students got narrowed through discussion of skills and techniques. Students expressed their joy over the contest after the race. Shu Ge, a PhD student, said, ‘the tournament is a good platform. I got the chance to contact more teachers and students other than my work in the lab. Mr. Lin Hai, my partner, is amicable and is good at badminton. We were delightful though we were confronted with competitive opponent.’ Jing Yuan, a graduate College student, said, ‘I would like to extend my thanks to the College for organizing the tournament. I got the chance to exchange with more teachers. We can get to know each other. The contest not just enhanced our passion to participate in sports; it enriched our College life other than study and academic research. Huang Jiawen, an undergraduate student of 2015, put it, ‘it was the first time that I attended a badminton race. It gave me lots of thrills.’ First, I confronted Mr. Zhang Kejun, my teacher, for the first round. Mr. Zhang is quite amicable and humorous in class, but in the badminton course, he is quite nimble and explosive. They deserve to defeat us for the first round. Mr. Ji, my partner for mixture double, is quite nice and humorous. He is a good badminton player. We knocked into the top 8 places. I got jittery when we confronted the men’s doubles with their repetitive smash, but Mr. Ji encouraged me all the way. I got calm down for that. The race helped me see a different side of teachers and students in the College. It was a quite delightful afternoon. I am expecting the next round. By the way, the awards are awesome. It amazes me.’ Zhang Yi, the organizer, put it, ‘as one of the organizers for the race, I witnessed their joy, applause and cheers. I took notice of their sweat and their enhanced friendship. Teachers and students got their friendship enhanced as they would switch from greetings to discussion on techniques and other things. Teachers are always solemn for students, but the activity shortened their distance and dispelled their estrangement. I think it is quite valuable.’ The race helped students get relaxed with sports exercise. It built a bridge of friendship for students sharing the same hobby. It established a new platform for exchange between teachers and students. Hopefully such activities can be held more and in a larger scale so that more teachers and students can get involved.

This program covered entrepreneurship and innovation projects. Under the guidance of advisors, students worked in teams in simulated entrepreneurial projects, from product design, drafting of business plan to road show, with teammates from India, Taiwan and other countries. Each afternoon, students would spend time with teammates from all over the world working on the projects. Students were divided to different teams, and each team would design products in a popular industry, from its appearance to technology, and from user analysis to marketing strategies. This program would help students get trained on their teamwork cooperation, collaboration and communication skills and other inescapable skills. Besides working on projects, students and teachers visited many world-famous companies including Google, PayPal and Cisco to experience enterprise culture and learn about design concept. Furthermore, students and teachers were also offered many opportunities to tour around cities and areas around the Silicon Valley to experience life in California. ‘The summer program on entrepreneurship and innovation in Silicon Valley helped me truly experience life in America. I got my future development plan more clarified.’ Said YANG Yihui, a student of Grade 2014. ‘I could feel the drastic disparity between China and America on education concept, work model and atmosphere for entrepreneurship and innovation. I have learned advanced ideology on schooling and project, which would have a huge positive impact for my future study or work. Many students indicated that education in America would prioritize cultivation of cooperation ability and problem-solving ability when compared with domestic education that laid more emphasis on education of knowledge and theories. It put many students jittery, who are aspired to pay more attention to elevate these qualities. This summer exchange program helped students bravely step out of the ‘comfort zone’ of language. Being surrounded by an English-speaking environment, students overcame language barrier, made friends with many new foreigners who shared the same ambition and got their international horizon extended. All those would root groundwork for their future educational or professional pursuit in the bigger stage in days to come.
