Three Teachers of Our College Won the First Excellent Teacher Award for Computer Science

On November 6th, the awarding ceremony for the 2018 Excellent Teacher Award for Computer Science was held in Peking University. 26 outstanding teachers from computer sciences disciplines of 9 universities in China became the first winners, receiving the award certificate jointly issued by the Computer Science Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, the China Computer Federation (CCF) and the China Teacher Development Foundation.

 

The Excellent Teacher Award for Computer Science was established by Professor John Hopcroft, winner of the Turing Award, winner of the Chinese Government Friendship Award and foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Gao Wen, Chairman of the Chinese Computer Society and an academician of the China Academy of Engineering. It is a public award program co-sponsored by Toutiao, Sinovation Ventures, Didi Chuxing, Baidu, Microsoft Research Asia, Sensetime, Alibaba, iFlytex, Lenovo, 360 and 10 other high-tech enterprises. The program has received support and guidance from the Ministry of Education and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It selects basic undergraduate courses related to computer science, organizes peer experts to evaluate class teaching, and awards teachers with excellent teaching achievements.

 

The award program is fully committed to the implementation of the spirit of the National Education Conference and the New Era National Undergraduate Education Work Conference, embodying the new requirements of “undergraduate orientation” to strengthen the quality of undergraduate education and teaching. It gives full play to the influence of high technology enterprises, guides social forces to jointly promote the improvement of the quality of higher education, and has been highly recognized by the leaders of the education sector.

In our College, Wu Fei, Weng Kai and Han Jinsong (in the sequence of last name) won this award. It is reported that the award program is the first joint action funded by ten high-tech enterprises. It aims to promote colleges to pay more attention to undergraduate education by offering evaluation and awards, improve the relationship between teaching and research, and stimulate the overall quality of computer science education in China.

Wu Fei

Wu Fei is a specially appointed professor and doctoral advisor at Zhejiang University. His main research areas are artificial intelligence, cross-media computing, multimedia analysis and retrieval, and statistical learning theory. He serves as the Vice Dean of the College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, and Director of Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Zhejiang University. He is the winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2016), the winner of the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education (2011), and the team leader of the Expert Team on Artificial Intelligence Technology Innovation of the Ministry of Education (2018.8-2020.12). He has taught undergraduate courses such as Computational Theory, Artificial Intelligence (Bilingual) and Image Information Processing and opened the MOOC on Artificial Intelligence: Models and Algorithms.

 

Weng Kai

Weng Kai graduated from Zhejiang University with a Ph.D. in computer application. After graduating in 1995, he stayed at Zhejiang University and taught for 20 years.


After work, Mr. Weng Kai devoted all his energy to undergraduate teaching and took on a large number of teaching tasks. All his courses were evaluated “Good” or better and most were evaluated “Excellent”. In the teaching process, he insists on reforming teaching content and methods, adheres to bilingual teaching, and sometimes teaches entire courses in full English; for some courses involving cutting-edge changes, he integrates the latest development results into the course content. He also actively contacts relevant off-campus experts to provide supplementary extracurricular lectures for certain courses to broaden the students' horizons. Since 2007, he has been rated as “my favorite teacher” by students every year and the “most influential teacher in my college career” by graduates.

 

Han Jinsong

Han Jinsong, Professor of the College of Computer Science and Institute of Cyberspace Research, Zhejiang University. In 2007, he received his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In July 2018, he was transferred to Zhejiang University. His research efforts focus on IoT security, trusted authentication, intelligent sensing, and mobile computing. In recent years, he has published more than 40 high-level articles in world-class journals and renowned international conferences; he won the 2011 Hong Kong ICT Award for Best Research and Innovation. His teaching is driven by scientific research and incorporates research instruments in the classroom. He emphasizes hands-on practice and integrates cultural knowledge and sentiments to inspire the spirit of exploration and innovation among students.
