The boundary of AI revitalisation

By ZJU CCST

With the ongoing application of artificial intelligence technology in recent years, AI has seen rapid advancements, leading to the rise of generative AI. Many individuals have utilized AI technology to revive their deceased loved ones, garnering widespread public attention. Simultaneously, certain experts and teams have introduced analogous services, aiming to resurrect the deceased and bestow upon them digital immortality. By transcending the boundary between reality and virtuality, what risks lurk behind the resurrection of AI? Where does the boundary between technology and ethics lie?

Recently, Tang Siliang, a professor at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, was interviewed by Zhejiang TV to discuss strategies for better oversight of AI technology applications and how to strike a balance between emotions and legal and ethical considerations.

Tang Siliang said, From the standpoint of ethical and moral restraints, we ought to exercise stricter oversight. This necessitates the collective efforts of the government, enterprises, and institutions of higher learning. For enterprises and institutions engaged in R&D of generative AI, they should refine and standardize these technologies. The government should establish industry standards, relevant regulations, and even introduce relevant laws to regulate the development of generative AI, ensuring it serves those in genuine need.
