Beng Chin Ooi elected as a Foreign Academician of CAS

On November 22, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the results of the 2023 academician elections, with 59 CAS Members and 74 CAE Members elected respectively. Additionally, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering also released the results of the 2023 foreign academician elections, electing 30 Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 16 Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Among them, Beng Chin Ooi, the Qiushi Chair Professor of College of Computer Science and Technology at Zhejiang University, has been elected as a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

 

Professor Beng Chin Ooi is a Foreign Academician of the European Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences, an academician of the Singapore Academy of Sciences, and an academician of the Singapore Academy of Engineering. He is also the Chair Professor at the School of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore, Outstanding Li Guangqian Professor at the National University of Singapore, Qiushi Chair Professor at Zhejiang University, Outstanding Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, ACM Fellow, IEEE Fellow, Overseas Director of the China Computer Federation, and a member of the Zhejiang Provincial Expert Committee on Artificial Intelligence Development. In 2023, he was elected as a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

 

Professor Beng Chin Ooi's primary research interests encompass database systems, blockchain and distributed systems, machine learning, and large-scale analytics. His research primarily focuses on system architecture, performance issues, security, and accuracy. He has consistently strived for innovation and industrialization in the ABCD (AI, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Big Data) domain, boasting over two decades of experience in enterprise-level platform development and system integration across various sectors, including big data analytics and solutions, intelligent manufacturing, financial technology, and artificial intelligence services. In 2008, Professor Beng Chin Ooi was elected as an IEEE Fellow; in 2009, he received the ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award; in 2011, he was honored with the Singapore Presidential Science Award; in 2011, he was elected as an ACM Fellow; in 2012, he was presented with the IEEE Computer Society Tsutomu Kanai Award; in 2014, he was honored with the IEEE TCDE CSEE (Computer Science, Engineering, and Education) Impact Award; in 2016, he garnered the CCF Outstanding Contributions Award; and in 2020, he was bestowed with the ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovation Award.
